I have put off a dentist appointment for an "ouchie" for MONTHS, I am such a blooming coward. Does anyone have some ideas on how to get over my fear before I go tonight, aside from a good, stiff drink????

I can't get you over your fear -but I can give you a good reason to go. Dental problems are no joke, you could get a really bad infection that could make you seriously ill or kill you. Besides, the longer you put it off the worse the problem will be and the longer the doc will have to work on you.

My thought is to get it over with as quickly as possible. I'm not joking either, I hate going to the dentist, but I go anyhow .

Just remember that it won't be forever in there and that you will ultimately feel better after he takes care of the ouchie. Most dentists realize that many people have a big fear of the dentist and have taken new measures to make sure you are as comfortable and pain free as possible. I don't know about the stiff drink, i did that once and my gums bled really bad when they started working on my teeth. The dentist told me that alcohol thins the blood and that actually complicates the dental work, but it's all up to you. Good Luck!

a stiff drink might not be a good idea before going to a dentist. Most dentists won't do anything if you ahve been drinking. Dentists aren't bad. I have been to atleast 10 different dentists and never had any problems. I had a root canal done when I was 8 years old with no novicane. The dentist told me I wouldn't be able to eat for 8 hours after the operation because of concern with me biting my tongue off as I wouldn't feel my tongue so I told him I didn't want to be numb. He did a 3 hour operation to one of my bottom teeth in the back and I didn't feel much pain. You'll be alright, don't worry. I have faith in you;)

If your Dentist gives nitrous oxide, get it! I'm exactly the same as you and I've never had a Dentist hurt me, but I still act as though they are killing me. I sit in the chair, with hands dug in the arms and watch everything they do to me. Sometimes, the fear never goes away and this is normal for people like us.........dental cowards! Just remember, they DO NOT hurt you. Nowadays, even novacaine does not hurt for the injection. The guage of the needle is so small and the Dentist will put cloves around the area first, just to make sure you don't even feel anything. Go and be thankful to get the work done tonight.

How about the fear that, if you don't go, your dental problems and the potential for much more pain in the future increases dramatically? A little pain for preventive maintenance is much easier to manage.

I am a big baby to.... but it helps if you have friend to go with you, one that understands that this is not a joke and that you really need their support. and when you get to the dentist office let the assistant know your fear and usually they can easy the experience by talking to you and talking to the dentist
