On this site, the vast majority of answers come from the Christian faction. I would love to read answers that come from those who do not follow either Christianity, Jeudaism or Islam. Yes, there are some pagans here but I'd really enjoy reading the spriitual ideas of other faiths. Any Buddists? Native Americans? If so, please give me your faith based ideas on this question.

Sin. Christians believe this is something more than "crime and punishment" because it impacts on your mortal soul. What is your take on the idea of sin? Do you believe it exists? Or is it simply cause and effect? Something that is dealt with fairly quickly in our physical reality?

I will be fascinated to read your responses. Thank you.

I can not truly give you a definition of something that does not exist other than to say that it is something that people believe in that is not real.

The idea of sin is a misrepresentation or a misunderstanding of what some of the actions of others and ourselves are. The idea is based on the idea that there are bad and good people. This idea is also a misrepresentation. It assumes a God that is not competent enough to organize a simple educational excursion and get all of the student’s home safely. This idea of God is ridiculous and will not stand up under even the slightest scrutiny. This is why the threat of hell fire and damnation is so prevalent in religious thought systems that see sin as real.

If the idea of sin was first presented to you as a child it can seem very real. This is why religions that uses these types of ideas to control the thoughts and actions of the so-called faithful attempt to indoctrinate at such an early age. Someone who was not indoctrinated with these ideas early, often simply see them as quaint or funny when they first hear of them as an adult. This is because they are looking at them logically with the mind of an adult.

I unfortunately had to disentangle myself from this pervasive web of nonsense as an adult who had been indoctrinated as a child, and it was quite difficult and took over 50 years. I thank God every day for helping me to see beyond the nonsense that I was infused with as a child.

Sin is extremely over rated. If you think karma will come back on you, then it will. If you are a positive thinker no matter what, then you can pretty much get away with anything. The mind is a very complex and powerful thing and can do miracles. Some things that people consider sin, I consider fun...and vice versa. I don't believe that you should go out and hurt someone on purpose, but if there is intention to better yourself and someone accidently gets hurt in the process then it's not your fault. I believe that we all created a type of "blueprint" before we even incarnated and our lives are pretty much laid out, with some side roads to be taken on occasion, but we never get off our path. Our spirit guide is always with us and pretty much represents that little inner voice which keeps us on the right track. No one is perfect, everyone will hurt someone at some point, whether it be intentional or not. Some of us signed up to be famous, others signed up to experience a brutal death, or poverty lifestyle, or mental illness, or whatever. We are all here to learn, love, and experience and then cross over to the other side. That is my take on it anyway.

Well, Sin.. I believe that there are a few universal ones.. that no matter what religion you are you should be trying to avoid.

First of all, no killing. Killing a person is wrong.. and it shouldn't matter wether you're a Christian, Muslim, Buddist, Native American.. whatever.. it's wrong.
Stealing is wrong.. add on all the above faiths.. it's wrong.

I believe that sin is a cause and effect of the reality that we currently live in. You kill someone.. that's a sin.. your punishment?? 25 to life.. that's what I believe.

I am a buddhist. Here are the four nobe truths:

1: We always suffer. This world is full of suffering. When we think we are happy we are just sufferin less.

2:Suffering is caused by a desire for wordly things. Buddha could explain it better:
Never have anything to do with likes and dislikes. The absence of what one likes is painful, as is the presence of what one dislikes. Therefore don't take a liking to anything. To lose what one likes is hard, but there are no bonds for those who have no likes and dislikes. From preference arises sorrow, from preference arises fear, but he who is freed from preference has no sorrow and certainly no fear.
Buddha

3: The desire for wordly faith is caused by the ego, self, or mind. In order to free our self from suffering and the cycle of rebirth we must destroy it.

4: The eigth-fold path, a way to destroy the ego.

1: Right Views
2: Right Resolve
3: Right Speech
4: Right Behavior
5: Right Occupation
6: Right Effort
7: Right Meditation
8: Right Contemplation

Thats Buddhism in a nutshell.
Note: Buddhists do NOT worship Buddha. Common misconception.

Sin can be defined as anything that you do that is wrong. If you do something, and you feel guilty about it, you probably sinned. "Sinning" impacts your moral character. If you do bad stuff all the time, and don't feel guilty about it, then you become someone who is not very nice, and of poor character. That's the most non-christian answer this christian can muster. :)

Sin is an ancient archers term that means "missing the mark". To "sin" then is to error or not achieve your goal. Falling short of the divine law. It is not bad or good, it simply is.
