My aunt is making a special trip to take us out for dinner. Well my mother-in-law invited herself along and my aunt is too kind to tell her that she wanted this time alone to spend with us. My mother-in-law sees us all the time. How do you politely tell her she's not welcome?

I can't reschedule my aunt is making a special trip. Besides, it was my aunt who told my MIL we were going to dinner, not me.

That's a tough one, I hate my mother-in-law, so I would flat out tell her she is not welcome to join me. I don't know what your relationship is with your MIL, but maybe your husband can speak to her and let her know that you want to spend time alone with your family. Good luck

I think you might just have to suck it up. It's a tough situation, and you'd only strain your MIL's relationship with you if you turned this into a huge deal. It's quite possible your aunt told your MIL, and implied an invitation. Who knows? Worse things happen all the time.

If it were me, I would reschedule with the aunt and tell the mother in-law it was canceled for whatever reason.
This will avoid resentment and hard feelings. Sometimes you have to keep it hush hush if you want to do something special and don't want the uninvited there.

tell your mother-in-law that your Aunt want to spend some private time with you if she don't mind and you and her can go out at another time .

Is your husband going to this dinner? If so then why shouldn't his mother be present?

As kind as possible tell her that this birthday celebration is just for us and make another date you can include her on.
