Not directly related to telecommunications, but of importance to the timing and synchronization of both
public and private telecommunication networks, is the global positioning system(GPS).GPS is used by
military and civilian ships and aircraft for navigation with unprecedented accuracy to destinations anywhere
on earth. This system consists of 24 Navstar satellites that circle the earth every 12 hours at an altitude
of 20200 kilometers.Four satellite are located in each of six planes. This system has created a huge
commercial market for hand-held GPS receivers. These units are typically used by weekend sailors and
backpackers.A glance at the unit's display not only gives your current position on the planet, but also
your elevation ,speed and course, all superimposed on detailed maps.Drawing its power from flashlight
batteries and using a small , built-in antenna, the unit takes about 30 seconds to find and lock onto radio
transmission from at least three Navstar satellites. The very high accuarcy of the GPS timing signals is
used in many telecommunication networks to supplement or replace the primary reference sources(PRS)
traditionally used to synchronize digital networks.
The Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation(GM) offer, as optional accessories on their
vehicles,GPS systems integrated with a cellular network that provide wirwless information and
communications services.
The GM accessory, named OnStar, can be activated by either of two buttons in the car,one for emergency
service and the other for real-time services such as route information and directions of hotels and restaurants.
The vehicle location, determined by the GPS system to an accuracy of within 100 meters(m) is transmitted
over the telephone network to the OnStar center, which is manned by a staff of advisors 24 hours system
allows the authorities to track its where abouts. They are even able to send a "killer" signal that will disable
the vehicle, so that the thieves are unable to continue driving.
The Ford Remote Emergency Satellite Rescue Unit(RESCU),also activated by a push button, dials an
emergency or assistance number, sends the vehcile location over the network, and connects the driver to the
assistance center.

In land surveying, GPS is used every day to determine positions on the Earth within 1 centimeter. All of the field crews where I work carry GPS equipment. I also have a Garmin 12 ($150) that I use for hobbies and travelling. I think everyone should own one.

GPS is being used in many industries and areas. As some people have already mentioned navigation, surveying, 911 location.
Expanding on the navigation, in aviation we're using GPS for the obvious tasks of situational awareness and navigating between two points as well as the less than obvious tasks such as approaches. A GPS approach allows the pilot to fly to some initial "fix" (a fix being an imaginary point in space known by the GPS) at a specific altitude, then flying to the next fix, and the next, all the way to the runway. At each fix, you decend down to some specified altitude. It gives the pilot a safe way to decend down to the airport in poor weather conditions without the added need of expensive ground based systems.
The military is using GPS in bombs to allow them to designate a point where the enemy is located, program the bomb, drop it, and fly away. The bomb flies itself to that point and hits it with amazing accuracy.
Delivery companies can use GPS to not only allow their drivers to easily find locations, but with satellite uplinks they can track their drivers' locations and allow greater efficiency in dispatching for pickups.
I've seen and heard some rather obscure and creative uses of GPS technology recently, but sadly my brain hasn't woken up yet and I can't think of them. :\

GPS has no part in MY daily life.
But when I was a kid, my dad did a lot of boating.
GPS allow you to return to the exact same spot you
caught all those fish at last time!..
Today rich peoples cars have GPS systems in them
that allow them to have a map that moves as they drive and shows them the way to where they are going.
I prefer a good old paper map myself.
Surveyors who survey land use them a lot to find a certain spot.

Well, your somewhat average Joe might use GPS for directions around town.
I use it while hiking in the Rockies to help make sure I can get back to base camp and that I don't get lost.
It is also used in agricultural applications to track when and where seeds are planted on their fields, and to track irrigation and fertilizer applications. It helps allow for more efficient and economical farming methods.
Ocean going vessels also use GPS to track where they are, where they have been and how to get back home. Helpful for fishing to track where schools of fish have been, or what areas of the ocean floor have been successful, or what might have been over-fished to avoid.
