I had the same problem for my older Dell Optiplex which is no longer covered under warranty. I called Dell support and gave them all of the information off of the desktop sticker (service tag #). My original desktop did not come with the restore CD; it was installed on a partition of the hard drive that I wanted to completely format.

To my great surprise, they shipped me a full restore cd (Windows XP) in two days for FREE; I did not even pay for shipping. Dell might be more expensive than other computers, but it is this kind of support and customer service that makes them so good.

The newer computers don't have one. It's already installed on the hard drive.
