yep audacity is your best bet. it is free and open source which means no annoying ads or trial versions. and it can convert from a variety of formats. and you can also change the waveform of songs if you want to

Not sure if there are any 'free' converters.
You could always download one from any P2P site.
The one I use is Acoustica! Power Pack.
