yep audacity is your best bet. it is free and open source which means no annoying ads or trial versions. and it can convert from a variety of formats. and you can also change the waveform of songs if you want to

I use a program called 'db power', it's easy, and generates a good mp3 (talking about quality)

You could always download one from any P2P site.
The one I use is Acoustica! Power Pack.
