So what's the question? Play with your 2 boys in your small house during the hours you're at home between your job that has short hours. Did that help?

"i have 2 boys and a small house i work and short hours and am at home a lot"
You are NOT asking a question, you are not saying anything that can even be considered a question.

Are you asking whether you should get a dog and what type?
If you can get a young dog from somewhere like the Dogs Trust you'd be able to crate train him more easily than a puppy. A labrador cross would probably suit the three of you. Try to get some time off work to settle him in. Dogs Trust temperament test the dogs before they're rehomed.
Take him to dog training classes and read up a bit before you go ahead.

I have a girl and a boy, a husband, and a Great Dane in an average sized house and work outside the home. I am home for over 17 hrs.

I'm guessing from your question that you're wondering whether to get a dog and what type?
Speak to the people at your local rescue centre. I know from experience that Dogs Trust have an excellent re-homing policy, especially for first-time owners - and so many different dogs of different breeds that they're very likely to be able to find the dog that's right for you.
Let them get to know what you are like, what your circumstances are. If you're honest with them (and yourself) that should make it easier to match the perfect dog for you.
They'll have young dogs in there, as well as older ones. Pure-bred and mongrel. Each one will have been assessed for temperament - the staff there will know what types of homes should be suitable for each dog.
Another suggestion - look at www.dogpages.org.uk and have a look at their forum. There's loads of friendly people that can give really useful advice.
Good luck!
