People often make up their own versions. They declare themselves Imams of their temples, find a bunch of illiterate followers (if they cannot read, they cannot contradict what I say is in the koran), and began teaching their messages.

If you ask me I'd say it's a difficult question.
To be Islamic your new version would have to have by definition (of "Islam") some common features with the main body of the faith. So no you can't *completely* reinvent. Whatever change *can* occur at all depends on who you ask. The West is searching for and hopes to train moderate democratist immams and schollars. Some muslims say this is tantamount to abandoning the essentials of the faith - they're the traditionalists and fundamentalists who are at loggaheads with the West, and also many of the Westernised 'powers that be' in the East. The fundamentalists and their supporters are opposed to dotrinal change and reinterpretation, whereas the moderates and their supporters and sponsors are not.
As for qualifications they come from institutions, and the powers behind the institutions will determine when what is said in the exam is correct or incorrect. Go to Packistan and go to London, and the same answer will score different marks from the examiner. As a rule you need qualifications to teach in present institutions, so if you want to start to influence the masses without qualifications you will need other means, ie money and access to the media. I am currently using one such means - the internet. There is little to stop a budding reformer from preaching new views on the www - providing he is not a terrorist or wwwless. S/he would however probably need a certain degree of intelligence and understanding in order to have an impact, as people tend to listen to and respect the educated and well informed rather than the one with less mental power. Although in this case qualifications are not necessary, they would probably be there in any case.

Can anyone make up their own version of Islam or do you need to be qualified?

Yes, and they do it all the time. That's why there are so many sects and it's not just in Islam. Qualifications are not necessary, only accepting adherents.

Have a pleasant day.

You can make your version provided you have lot of money. Lot of money buys lot of followers. And your followers will follow your version of Islam. Hence you see Islam is followed differently in different countries but the essence and spirit will remain same.

Islam dont have divisions. There is only one Islam, but as you say some people change their way and they call it Islam, this is not true of course.
If you become a muslim, then you should adjust yourself to Quran, and the life of Mohammed (pbuh).
