Swords are good for casting circles and also, if you are using a large cauldron it's nice to use a sword. The athame is better if you're doing work on a small altar, but the sword is nice when you're in a larger space with larger materials. It's also good for defensive magick and to "salute" the spirits as you invite and dismiss them.

Swords are great tools for outdoors and large rituals. They are big and dramatic. Most folks I know use an athame/or hand indoor or with smaller groups of people.

Really the bottom line is whatever works for you and whatever maims the fewest people.

Use whichever tool feels most comfortable within the bounds of safety. If you have a twenty foot wide room where you can do a full circle with the extended sword, and a ceiling high enough to hold it up straight up, it's perfectly acceptable for indoor use. As in all things ritual, remember that it's not the object that has power, it is you.

Swords are mostly used outdoors. They can be pretty clumsy indoors so I suggest an athame for indoor rituals.

You can use your sword in place of your athme whenever you deem appropriate. Swords can be especially good for casting circles.

It's really up to you and what feels the most comfortable when it comes to rituals.

I think the idea of using your sword outdoors and reserving your athme for indoors is a good one.

If you think back into time.. did those that walked this path, have all these objects.. all the right colored candles, etc..
Hint: if you really need a physical. candle.. and all you have is turtle wax and a shoestring.. combine them!
I rarely had time to find such objects, or go about casting the circle..but I went with a pure heart, and sincere words..
Things are nice to have - things are nice to hold - but the true magic lies within..

May your journey take you to the truth..

Personally, I would use the sword in Outdoor rituals, because then you have more space in which to work safely with it.

Tools are personal items used to direct and concetrate energy, You could use a rubber chicken if it helped you.

Its about how that tool effects your mindstate and helps you acheive your higher self. If you can acheive your higher self and magickal state
