For a Software Professional what does 'Bench' mean? This is a term very commonly known to a software professional. I have heard of various definitions for it, but could not really get the right one. Of maybe I didnt really accept any of those as the right one. Hence this question here as to get some of the answer and then collate them here itself.

Bench in software company means that the individual is not allocated to any project that doesnt mean the individual will be with out work he may be trained and he can ruse the resourse to get further knowledge

Haa haa..
If a s/w guy says he is in bench, he means that he is not working in any projects. Just reading some tehnical stuffs (or doing nothing ;) )
related to the project he expects. But he is getting the salary from the company.
