My daughter wants to put blond highlights in her natural red hair (more like a straberry blonde color). Is this something we could do at home and if so does anyone have any suggestions on what type of blonde to use?

I am a natural red head & I have done highlights before.

Blond isn't my first choice, I did it & regretted it. But she is probably young & wants to try something new.

She would do good to get champagne/golden colored hilights & some golden brown lolights for contrast.

It looks quite fetching on us red heads actually!
I get many compliments when I do my hair that way!

She might want to do what I did. Put darker lowlights and then add very few highlights. I have a real deep red natural hair color. All I did was pull about 1/2 my hair through a cap put a dark brown hair color (i think it was loreal) and then pulled about 1/4 of my hair out and bleached it. I always get compliments. But she has a light red so I wouldn't recommend a dark brown. Try some caramels, darker reds, and warmer blondes. try not to make the highlights white. redheads should go darker and then very few strands of blonde. And tell her people try to get our color out of a box and they cant, so if at all possible, do not dye your hair!

I have extremely light blond hair, and I am always putting different colored highlights and lowlights in it. Just a few months ago I had red streaks put in...everyone loved it..and I work at a hair salon, so I don't think they were just being nice ;-)

They do have at-home highlighting kits but highlighting is a tricky thing. You can really botch up the job and end up with very unnatural highlights. My advice would be to have it professionally done. If you do decide to do it at home, get a highlighting kit that will contain all of the tools you need and the color will be provided.

i would take her to the salon, they suprisingly aren't that expensive.I paid i think less than $20 at one of the salons in the mall. i have the same strawberry blonde hair, and if it's thick like most red-heads hair is, it'll soak in the dye quickly and you never know what's going to happen. also, it would be the perfect oppurtunity to find a good stylist for your daughter, and teach her about proper hair care care, trims, good shampoos, etc.

Blonde highlights on natural red hair will look bad.Better try purple highlights on her hair.

if you have blonde hair this will naturally get bleached by the particular sun in the summer. There had been this guy in my class who else had golden blonde hair that had been a medium brown near the bottom part. When he came back to college after summer vacation, it was nearly platinum blonde!
