I've had it, so I know. "Generalized" anxiety is like a constant state of worry/nervousness. You feel on-edge and not quite right. You may have trouble sleeping, b/c your mind races with all kinds of worries and "what ifs?".
An anxiety attack feels different. You usually feel fine, and then out of the blue, your heart races, you feel like you might faint, really hot, sweating, nauseous, all kinds of bad. It is awful. People feel like they are going to die, but you will not. The feeling passes in anywhere from 2-20 minutes.

Anxiety is a feeling of dread that something terrible might happen, or being anxious about something that is not immediately apparent--something that most people wouldn't give a second thought to. For example, having anxiety about taking a test or making a speech, is normal. After you've done these things, the anxiety goes away. But if you have an anxiety about stepping on cracks in a sidewalk, or meeting new people, or other irrational fears, that's abnormal anxiety. So if you suffer from the latter description, you probably could benefit from psychiatric help. However, if you have to ask what anxiety is, you probably don't have it, because it is a very uncomfortable feeling, leading to phobias that can restrict a lot of your daily activities, If you do have it, please get some help, because these crippling feelings can get worse.

Feeling on edge or uncomfortable around situations, racing thoughts, worrying, heavy feeling in chest or stomach as though something just happened or is about to, unrealistic worrying about a situation that can cause your body to twitch, hands shake, breathe harder, or skin feels 'crawly', impulsive thoughts to leave or get out of a situation

You will have a feeling of impending doom. You will definitely think your having a heart attack, and think your going to die. You can start to have cold sweats, feel numb, tremble and you might have a panic attack. You will have intense fear of moving and be stuck in your tracks. It's the worst fealing in the world other than servere pain etc.

To me it feels like this terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that I just want to reach in and pull out. Of course, I can't. I feel as if something terrible is going to happen any minute and then I feel terrible fear and there is no reason for me to be feeling this way.
