She may be diabetic or she may be suffering from depression. You should probably advise her to consult a doctor.

Well, Josh....lets see now. Bad diet, no exercise, ....hmmmm. How much sugar and startch is lisa consuming? Bad diet and no exercise will also trigger the depression in some people. Does she seem depressed? Walking in the best way to get started towards a better her, so convince her to take a walk with you, everyday. Suggest higher protein and much less sugars and startches.......How do I know....because i was there. I didnt sleep all the time but my energy level was low.
I started going to the gym, started on the tread mill and could barely do 5 mins, out of breath and feeling crappy. That was in March 06. I'm also over weight(way over weight)....I have managed to shed some 25 lbs(there was a time for about 2 months i did nothing) and have moved up to the eliptical machine and can push myself to do 25min....I also work on lower and upper body with weight machines now. When i first started it was just the tread mill.
So talk with her and help her get out of the slump. If i can do it.....anyone can it. Hope this helps...and thanks for caring for you friend.

continue being her friend, tell her you care and want to help both of you by walking every day, start out just walking 15 minutes a day. Walk 7 and a half minutes one way, then turn around and walk back, that will be 15 minutes. Do this for a week, then up it to 30 minutes, 15 minutes one way, 15 minutes back.

She may have a blood sugar imbalance which can lead to imbalances in other bodily chemicals. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can cause obesity (it did for me).
It is hard to "do" something for others. Please do not get frustrated if she resists your efforts. If you can get her to eat stuff you fix, fix her meat - like a can of tuna or salmon, with some fresh green veges, like (non-iceberg) lettuce, spinach, broccoli, or cabbage.
You may want to learn more about low blood sugar and blood sugar imbalances. If you can encourage her to see a doctor and get tested, you will know what tests she could ask her doctor to do. You may want to look at www.hufa.org for some basic information.

Sounds like depression. There is a paper & pencil test that the doctor can give her to see; A person can be depressed and not even realise that they are.

She could be depressed, have a thyroid problem, be diabetic or have a number of other medical conditions. She really should see a doctor.
