Religion draws people who want to be told what to do, whipped when they're bad and praised when they're good.

Organized religion attracts slavish personalities who would do anything to please their leaders. In this respect they have a lot in common with neocons.

I think that there are two major different types of religious/spiritual people:

1) The truly spiritual person who is interested in learning and exploring issues of spirituality and religion. Such people are genuinely curious about the beliefs of other religions; they also tend not to be sheep that just follow the herd. Sometimes they espouse the dominant religion, but they have no problem whatsoever in questionning that relgion and even disagreeing with parts of that religion.

2) Yes, the person who uses it as a crutch. Sometimes it's a social crutch... church provides a place where they can meet people and not feel threatened as much as they would out in regular social situations. Other times it's a spiritual/existential crutch... they fear death or their own inadequacies and need to believe in something that makes them feel better. In my experience, these people don't question their religion & they definitely never disagree with any parts of their religion. It's more important to them to hope for uniformity in dogma because they tend to be threatened by the type of people listed under #1 above.

I think it's for those who don't want to think it all through and do the work of studying all available texts and making up their own mind. I also believe most people don't have the freedom to do this because of either their country or their family will stop them from learning anything else but what the country or family has accepted as true, and good enough, and everything else is a lie and bad for you.
I think a pretty good indicator your in a religion that isn't very well represented is if you have to either hate someone else, kill someone else in the name of this religion or God, or mutilate a woman because the Creator made her wrong and you have to make her in your image of woman. Pretty sick stuff. Sounds sort of gangstah to me. That's why I tell people when asked, what religion are you, that I am Pagan, and I say it with a wild eyed suspicious face and follow it up with, and it's against my religion to talk about it farther or else someone shall die. Not true of course but it keeps me from hearing that whole, "your going to hell" rap.If I actually have to cop to a type, then I say,the same as Jesus. I'm a Gnostic. Not because I am a Christian, but because I am not.
Did you really want to know this, or was it an opening to maybe talk dirty?

Don't confuse religion for faith or spirituality.
I think many people do in fact use religion as a crutch, and as a smoke screen but it is not for weaklings. It takes concentration, devotion and strength to belong to religion and in some countries even a great deal of courage as some religions are against the law for the pain of death.

Religion is for the people who lack the mental capacity to understand Evolution... Like the people who think evolution says we actually evolved from monkeys... I hate those people...
