Her energy level seems fine, but I think the heartworm pill upset her stomach / intestine. What are some ways to calm down a dog's stomach?

I have called the vet, and have an appointment. (I had one before I posted this.) But until I can get in (tomorrow), I'm looking for suggestions. Vet says just withhold food 24 hours, but I think there's more that can be done to make the dog comfortable.

Call your VET!
Also I have heard that cooked white rice helps with diarrhea.

Hi:
First check with your vet, if your pet has had it for more than 2 days you need to see him/her today! It could be a reaction to the meds, please check the dosage and verify with your vet. Also you did not mention the breed. Certain breeds (ie: collie) have a sensitivity to certain heartworm meds. There are many things unrelated to the heartworm that could have just happened to flair up.

Switch the dog to a bland diet, I would suggest white rice and chicken broth - not chicken meat for now. We want the stomach quiet and digesting meat might be too much at the first onset of the diarrea. Montior the dog and make sure they are not getting worse. If the diarrea persists or you notice blood in the stool see your vet immediately. It could be bacterial infection.

I personally like Kaolin/Pectin as found in keopectate. Pepto is simular and would work as well, but it contains an asprin compound which may make things worse?? But this is only good for about 2 days, if diarrea returns or does not clear see your vet. .5ml per pound (20lbs = 10ml) every 4-6 hours.

Hope you dogs feels better. Of course I claim no particular knowledge of this animal and offer my instructions as an opionion and not as a vetrenarian. If in doubt see your family vet!

Our vet recommends a little plain yogurt. It restores the healthy bacteria to the intestines. Works for people and most animals but don't give too much at a time 1/2 c average

some heartworm meds also contain a de-wormer. Check what you have, as your dog while it needs the heartworm pill monthly - it does not need to be dewormed every month. You can give your dog pepto bismal - a teaspoonful - to help with the upset tummy.

You need to call your vet..asap!
Maybe your darlin was given a higher dose then needed. Don't delay in calling.. there are many reasons for what's happening, and the sooner you phone, the better off your dog will be..

Pepto - The other is kaopectate but Im not sure but not all of them can be given to your dog.

Also which HW preventative was it. Some kill other parasites in the intestines and your dog my be releasing them in her stool

My vet told me when my dog had the runs, was to cook a chicken breast, just plain. And feed him that.
It fixed him up in a day.
