Learn Windows Explorer. Open My Documents, then click on the FOLDER button. Now you see the folders on the left, and the files of that folder on the right.
Scroll down to MY COMPUTER on the left side. Hit the PLUS sign to reveal the drive that you want to COPY to.
Simply DRAG the files from the right side, while holding the mouse button. Then DROP it on the drive that you want to copy too.
I recommend that you get one of the new THUMB drives for your USB port. That is an excellent backup device. Many Windows XP computer have unreliable floppy disk drives (A).
It is best to use the CD burner software that came with your computer and CD drive. Run that, and select all of the files that you want saved to make a full backup of your precious data.
The whole reason to do backup, is that someday.. your computer will die. It will not live forever. 7 to 9 years is pretty old. But sudden death is possible, especially with the threat of viruses, spyware, malware, and even thunderstorms, which can totally destroy your computer.

If it's just one file, I would just copy it to wherever you want the backup located. Be sure to back it up often.
