she is peeing on the carpets again in the same spot. My dog is 10 years old. Is there something I can get that will discourage her from peeing on the carpets? What product can I use that will get rid of the smell. It's embarassing when people come over. My house is clean. Lighting candles doesn't always work. I need a better solution. A more permanent solution (no, not putting my dog to sleep). Is this due to her age? If I leave the house She always goes out for potty before I leave. This is a frustrating problem. She's ruined our carpet and it will have to be ripped out sometime in the future.

If excessive and over a period of time, the urine has soaked through the carpet into the underlayment, padding, and/or into the latex backing of the carpet.
Carpet cleaning will not remove it under those conditions.

Cleaning with a vinegar/water solution may prevent the dog returning to the same spot, but it may be too late to help.
DO NOT rub the carpet. Blot and sponge. Clean with clear water after, blot, then lay a towel or paper towels over it, weight it, leave for a few hours, and it will absorb balance of moisture.
Cold water, not warm or hot, room temp ok.

yes, I'd say that it is due to her age that she pees on the carpets. She is getting older and probably cant hold out for too long of a time. sometimes putty out a puppy pad that has the scent on it (you can by them at your local pet store) will sometimes help. If she is a large dog, put together more than one. As for the carpets, the only thing that I have found that helps is while vinegar. Shampoo the carpets with this, let it soak for a little bit then shampoo again with a good shampoo. Sam's club sells a product called O-Ban, that is wonderful to help get rid of smells. Smells like baby powder. I work in a nursing home, so getting rid of smells is important. If none of this works, you might have to get them professionally done. GOOD LUCK

There are several possibilities. She may be doing this out of insecurities, or, due to her age, she may be having trouble with her bladder control. As for controlling it, you may consider a kennell to put her in when you leave the house, and possibley at night, depending on when these accidents are happening. (worked wonders for our dog)

As far as the smell goes, I would suggest white vinegar, full strength. It is the most effective thing I have found. That will at least help to diminish your embarrassment when you have guests. Also, restrict her access to that spot if at all possible.

Replacing the carpet in that spot is highly recommended, as the urine has most likely seeped down to the floor. Even though you won't be able to smell it, she will, due to her keen sense of smell. After replacing the carpet, you might try the preventative measures I have suggested.

Good luck!

All the dog books say to use some type of enzyme cleaner. This is the only thing that can eliminate the acid in the dog urine. If the acid is not eliminated from the carpet, your dog can continue to smell that acid and will "recognize" that spot as "pee-ed on before, so ok to pee on again."

Any of the urine cleaner products found in pet stores are enzyme cleaners, so use any one of them.

I have begun to rate dog training eBooks on a non-commercial site, best-dog-training-products. In my research, I have found one book, Puppy Houstraining: The Ultimate Guide by Nathalie Lafleur to be very complete. She also includes a good section on accident clean up.

Hope this helps.

You can buy urine and odour removers from pet stores. Theres heaps of different brands out there. I went through bottles of the stuff when i was training my pup. The best thing about it, is that because it removes the odour completly from your carpet so your dog wont continue peeing in that spot- unlike the more traditional remedies- such as the baking soda vinegar.

have you tried vinegar and water on that spot? My dog is also 10 and she sometimes gets upset when i leave even though i take her out before i go. I have also tried a watersoftener with a pet carpet cleaner solution both work very well.

If you steam cleaned your carpet that was the worst thing you could have done. The heat sets the stain and does nothing to remove the odor which in turn will attract your girl back to her "spot". An excellent product is Natures Miracle.

Try using a solution of baking soda and water. The soda neutralises the odour and it will refresh your carpet. Hope this answer helps.
