I think many have misconstrued what speaking in tongues was in Jesus' day. Most if not all that "claim" to speak in tongues today speak gibberish and no one in the whole congregation can translate what they are saying. In the bible those that spoke in tongues were actually speaking in the native languages of the surrounding nations. This was how God's message was spread. People actually understood and could recieve God's word. When the Jews heard Jesus’ followers speaking in perhaps over a dozen different languages, what effect did it have upon them? “They were astonished,” the Bible says, “and began to wonder and say: ‘See here, all these who are speaking are Galileans, are they not? And yet how is it we are hearing, each one of us, his own language in which we were born? . . . we hear them speaking in our tongues about the magnificent things of God. ”—Acts 2:5-11

No. Speaking in tongues only serves to edify the one who is speaking and the LORD. There is never any translation! I believe that many HAVE the gift of translation, which I mention because when speaking in tongues in public, it should only be done with an interpretation so POSSIBLY the gospel does get spread, but I doubt this has happened more than once or twice in the history of Christendom.
The language is not an earthly language, so your being bilingual means nothing. On the day of Pentecost when believers began speaking in tongues, there were people who understood because they heard their own language.
I believe SOME are so obsessed with it because of the spririt of Confusion and because it is an easy outward show of the spririt inside, sometimes I think those who speak in tongues should be more respectful of the different levels of those around them so as not to cause DISTRACTION and CONFUSION.
Peace.

They're obsessed with it because they believe that the gibberish must be from another source other than the gibberish part of their brains. They don't realize that anyone could produce the same sort of nonsense.

I think some people are in the mind set that it gives them power or some how gives them a ( One up ) on everyone else.
It's more like a fear me I can speak in tongues...
..............But
How do you know what the language is and if you can speak it would anyone else know it?
If it is jibberish that no one understands then is it really a language?

Speaking in tongues is something stupid southern preachers of the "old school" perform. They have a limited vocabulary, and too much energy. They either need to read the dictionary or STFU.

Speaking in tongues was a gift given to the apostles by the holy Ghost.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
1Corinthians 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
These gifts were given to the apostles after Jesus raised from the dead, so they could continue what He started, after he assended to His Father.
How do you expect the speaking of tongues to spread the gospel, when it cannot be understood by anyone other that God Himself?

Speaking in tongues is of no worth unless there is an interpretation of what is being said.

It means that you are speaking God's language! People that speak in tonuges are really talking in the way that God talks. It's really a close bonding moment when you speak to God in tonuges and brings the two of you together in a deeper way because when you talk to God, he responds in English, the way you understand it....but when you speak in tonuges, you get to speak to Him in His language. It's really cool stuff!
