Anyone can be a conservationist by recycling, cleaning up litter, carpooling, having a fuel efficient auto, using less packaging, etc.
Want to get a good wake up call, read the book, Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. It is nonfiction, written in the 1960's but still applies today. Conservationists are interested in environmental issues and causes. Missouri Department of Conservation probably may have a volunteer jobs for you. Just noticed in the Missouri Conservationist magazine mentioned a new position of lifetime volunteer, a person who regularly shares knowledge accumulated over a lifetime. The Missouri Conservationist is free to residents of Missouri.
If Drury University is near your area, you might like the class History of Terrestrial Plants and Animals, a 4 credit hour class. Drury also offers Ecology(3c.h.) and other 1credit hour related courses that are usually on a Saturday. Best Wishes

A serious will to make things happen and a bit of understanding on environmental needs. it's not hard.

Now, if you want schooling, try looking for colleges that offer biology or ecology. That should get things going for ya.
