I've had my parakeet for over 2 weeks now. He appears to be eating his seed and millet and drinking water. I noticed a few days ago that his poo is not falling to the cage bottom. It looks to be sticking to him instead and getting built up. I caught him and used a few kleenex to pull it off him. What is the reason for this? Should I get him a water bottle that hangs from the side of the cage instead of a water dish? What is causing this to happen to my bird. The poor little thing.

Do NOTT give it mineral oil. If it's sticking to the area around the vent it's because it had diarrhea....that's what happens when birds have diarrhea..it sticks to them. And with your explentation of the food it's on, it's almost certainly diet related. I'd firstly go buy some avicakes by lafeber because it has seed/pellets compact into squares and they have to eat the pellets to get to the seeds. Seeds and millet are a fatty diet and its hard telling how long the bird has been on that kinda diet. Try getting him the avicakes to change his diet. Also give him some greens and unthawed frozen mixed veggies. You have to get that birds diet changed from seeds to pellets and fresh fruits and veg.

I hope you haven't taken any action yet. I noticed that you mentioned his water bottle, and I wondered if you thought he was dehydrated? I ask because, if his droppings are dark dark green and unusually firm, it's a sign of liver dysfunction. A vet shouldn't charge you very much to smear his droppings and check for abnormalities. Abnormal droppings are the first sign of illness.

Take the suggestion of pellets and fresh foods seriously, but offer them slowly, and do it after you're sure he's healthy. Sudden changes in diet can hurt him just as badly as a bad diet.

Offer him a little, tiny papaya slice -- no seeds; never give him seeds of pits from fruit (one reason is that they retain chemicals used in farming). Papya is a digestive aid. He still needs a check-up, but if he's a little stopped up, papaya will help him loosen up ... that's why you should definitely only give him a little :)

He's probably just fine, but it's always better safe than sorry. Was his health guaranteed? The breeder or pet store may want to know, if he does turn out sick.

This may solve your problem as well as extend your parakeets life. I took my keet to a bird specialist for a liver infection. He said that seeds and millet are the worst thing you can feed your bird because of a very high fat content. My bird eventually died of fatty liver. Slowly change your birds diet to pellets, and throw in some veggies with it. Your bird will live longer and it may also solve your pooping problem. Good luck.

why dont u let the bird free of the cage? they are not meant to be caged....once u set it free you wont have this problem to hang water bottle or poo problem..sounds messy affair :)
