1. To make ur MS Word work, search for a file by name "normal.dot" and delete all instances of it from your computer & restart. It should work just the way it used to be!
2. Similary for MS Excel, search for a file by name "excel.xlb" and delete all instances of it from your computer & restart. It should work just the way it used to be!
normal.dot and excel.xlb are the template files when corrupted the application doesn't open. Hence deleting their instances & restarting makes the application to re-create the template and thus your system starts working fine.

There can be some options.
1. Your partition has bad clusters and scandisk isolated them, and unfortunately some bad clusters had some office files.
2. You are infected with a virus.
3. You have a hacked version of MsOffice, which can cause instability of the program.
I advice you to repair/reinstall the program, Restore a previous restore point that worked or buy a licensed copy.

Do an anti virus scan. If you have no virus and the problem remains then do a system restore. If the problem persists then you will need to go back to basics and return your system the manufacturers settings - but download your files to a CD first.
