Are ministers and priests afraid to stand up to these people because in their eyes, "they get the work done"?

Yes! YEs! and another yES!
Unfortunatly people are people. Old women and other Church memebrs alike. Gossip/drmam always shakes things up a bit when you life is boring. SO you look forward to hearing the drama (misery loves company) so that in some way you feel better or that you feel above what is going on in someones life. Its a dressed up form of Judging another human being.

i really haven't encountered what you're talking about. i guess i could see this problem cropping up in smaller more fundamentalist churches where things like level of participation are considered a reflection of level of faith. in my church (catholic) the members don't really seem so concerned about what other people are doing. i mean, different groups try to get people to participate but i think that's because they usually need more volunteers. i think it's clear to everyone that church is for worship and that might be due to the doctrination and ritualization that mass has always had. it's very structured as opposed to what the pastor (minister, whatever) feels like talking about that week.

Unfortunately, Christians, and others, are still human beings, and
subject to human failings. I personally tried to get some help with some music for Jesus, and was met with all kinds of
jealousy. Ministers acting like I would take the attention away from them, etc, from Christian people.
Truly spiritual people make the same mistakes we all make.
The difference is, they own up them, and make them right.

Sad, but true. Regardless of how hard humans try, the human side always comes through.
