I'm 32 years old, a beginner in strength training. What would be a good size weight for me to use while doing hammer curls? 5lbs? 8lbs? or heavier?

Well since your just starting out I would suggest 5lbs, and then work your way up to 8lbs, do 8-10 reps 3 sets.

1. Use 3lb Dumbbells to build your strength.
2. Work up to 5lb Dumbbells.
3. Finish up with heavier weights.

Depends on what your goal is; if you want toned biceps, aim for muscle failure at 15-20 reps. If you want mass, do heavy weight where muscle failure occurs between 4-8 reps. Remember that this exercise is an isolation movement, if you are a beginner, you should stick with compound movements. EG: to work your biceps you should do pulling exercises like rows, pull ups, etc.

Do heavy weights and low reps to make big muscles.
Do light weights and lots of repts to get small sleek muscles.
