It is a rhetorical question, with the presumption that the answer is no.
Prof Hawking is making a statement that the universe is intrinsically self-contained, and in the context of this theory God, as an idea, is redundant.
Not all cosmologists, to my limited understanding, agree with this.
However, even if Hawking is wrong and the universe does have a beginning, God is not the answer, as we are then left with the scientific problem of what created God (and of course we KNOW that the universe exists through empirical evidence, but what do we know of God?)
Of course, there will always be those who bizarrely believe that Pat Robertson or some long-dead religious writers are smarter or more knowledgeable about cosmology than Hawking or Einstein and will such ideas for Biblical or Qu'ranic literalism.

There are two baskets to chose from. The first one contains all the scientific data mankind has gathered and the second one contains myths, legends and superstitious nonsense, AKA all the religions of the world. most people pick bits and pieces out of each basket, whatever they feel comfortable with, and for them, this is the' truth.' The real truth is that all the contents of the second basket need to be discarded as clinging to this nonsense severely retards intellectual development.

I don't think that Stephen Hawking is smart enough to understand the things that God does...
And what if the universe is not completely self-contained?...
I guess we'll (or at least me) have to wait until people with minds as great as Stephen Hawkings figure them out.. if they can.

Stephen Hawkings is the man- however Hawkings does believe there was a beginning, he's not so sure about the end but touches on that in his works. In this exerpt he is just questioning the reader, that's all.

If it helps you to sleep at night then you can hold on to the belief that the creator was the one who orchestrated all of the events. Just because the bible says the Earth was created in 7 days doesn't mean that God really did it that way...he does work in mysterious ways afterall.

Texas Heaven You have given me (us) a brief glimpse what could be any-ones life. To me, that is the metaphorical premise of the poem, not the questions per se (cept last one), though your intent could be to lead us to the last stanza >>>>yes, yes, yes ...and finally the last of it. I knew this was leading some where and your close, a single sentence >> "Did ya cuss God _______ This is extremely introspective piece to say the least, and one that I am thankful of His grace, However my answer is unfortunately: Yes _______________________________________...
