If your XP disk is genuine with a valid product key, you can get a replacment from Microsoft for a small fee. You can get assistance at this site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx
When you get the new disk (or, you can even try the old disk) do a system file check. Click start > run > type in "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space between sfc and /scannow) > OK.
If any corrupt or missing files are located, you will be prompted to insert the XP disk and files will be repaired or replaced as needed.

You definitely need a new disc cause old one is corrupted.
I don't think safe mode is going to do any good but i really don't know much about working in safe mode. You can repair your windows xp but don't use recovery console. Or you can reinstall windows without reformatting the drives if you don't want to loss data. But the thing is you need another disc, old one is corrupted.

Do a scan disc, to see what the problem is. I had the very same problem a few months back. The error was due to corrupt files, I did manage to fix it eventually. But it meant me doing a recovery. And my advice if you are not too up on computers get help from someone who is. No doubt you will get more informed answers than mine. I do hope so good luck!

reinstall windows. No need to reformat as you'll lose everything on your hard drive.
You coulrd try the window fix on the CD, but this 99 times out of a hundred will fail.

Try reinstalling Windows.
If this fails, reformat the drive.
Do this under the guidance of a PC Expert.

i think ms dos is gone or something, does it have all that gibberish at the start?
There is a serial number when re-installing the windows that you need to take note of and put it in when it prompts you.
Or better still, take it to a computer expert.
