Many of them have mental problems and nobody to care for them. It's not all that funny.

Yes, it's religion that makes a person decide that, "Hey! I don't like my fancy high-rise apartment anymore, nor do I like my jet-setting lifestyle, I hate my high priced job! You know what- that bag lady down there seems to really like her lifestyle of poverty and derision, I'll give up modelling to do that - It' looks like fun! I'm atheist now, but when I'm dirty and run down - then they'll KNOW I'm Christian! People become street folks because of their own free will??? Will it make them more "marketable" if they are? These people have a religion all on their own - it's called "surviving", and I give them credit. As a Chirstian, I help them, when I can, as should anyone who has a heart, Christian or otherwise. Rather than fighting , why don't we help?

Maybe they came from a nice home like you and me but sometimes life takes a wrong turn. It could be a result of drug abuse, health or mental problems or even loosing a spouse to death. Any of these could give you financial problems where you can not make payments and loose eveything. Next thing you know you have no family and no place to live and end up on the street.

Can't answer "why", but Jesus taught us to be merciful to people who have the misfortune to end up in circumstances such as that. James says, "this is pure and undefiled religion, to visit orphans and widows in their distress and to keep onesself unstained by the world."

Same reason people do anything else.
Because they want to.
Why do people slave away at some menial job for subsistence wages? Is it their religion, or, something else?
