I am American....Blonde with blue eyes. An obvious non-Turk. I am also not a Muslim. I have lived in Istanbul for 3 years now and NEVER ONCE have I EVER had a problem. The people that write answers are idiots sometimes. Don't believe everything you read or see on the news. I have many friends from all over the world here in Istanbul and none of us have ever had a problem. The problem is believing all you see in the news and all we see in America is desert and camels and believe that. (I have never seen either of those here) Turkish people are the nicest people I have met in the world and I have traveled all over. They will give you the shirt off their back if you even hinted that you like it or need it. The food is delicious and the sights are spectacular. I recommend anyone to come here at least once in your life to see it. By the way, I am also married to a Turk. An only son at that and we don't have problems from his family, they are wonderful.

I live in turkey and have been here for 5 months now. It is mint the whole time i have been here i aint seen 1 drop of rain its around 40 degree's every day.

Some of these people are right you do get hassled but over the past couple of weeks it has become ilegal to hassle which i found out myself after a run in with a copper.

The clubs are great, the beaches are the best ive seen and ive been to many places. You can also haggle all the shop staff down to the price you want.

Before i came to turkey i thought it was all shanty huts and stuff like that, but where i live it is developing so fast its unbelievable.

I came on holiday 5 months ago and i still aint been home thats how good it is.

if your planning on coming to turkey and need any advice or anything else mail me i'm always pleased to help.

I guess the cultural and religious differences can make it a problem for some people from the West.
Saying that it is a beautiful country steeped in history and The Gateway to Asia.
I don't think they should have invaded Cyprus, and I am undecided on the absorption of Kurdistan, but that is as much the Wests' problem.
It is a beautiful place to go for a holiday and boasts lovely beaches superb food and hospitality, great history (Ephesus is one of the Wonders of the Ancient World) Troy is in Turkey and there are lots of Roman and biblical places of interest.
Istanbul is a vibrant cosmopolitan city combining East and West.
I guess yesterdays terrorist attacks show a different picture and will put many people off of going there, which is a shame.

well this is the right question for me...i've been to turkey 3 times till now, and i think that this means that i fell in love with this country, it's amazing, the building, the people, the delicious food, the shopping, the streets, and the beautiful clubs ( SHE WA club in istiklal street in the best )...well i spent the most beautiful days of my life when i was there with my friends, also i love the turkish songs, well i feel home when i'm in turkey, i donno y, but maybe cuz it reminds me a little of my country, i'm from egypt n in egypt we hear the man who's calling for the praying in the mosque, same thing is turkey, and it's a muslim country although not much people practice the relegion in a right way....but each country has it's positives n negatives...also few people speak good english, which let me use my hands to describe exactly what i want and it makes me laugh n remember those memories...if i have the chance to go again i wont hesitate, i love this country n i have lots of turkish friends...;)

I am very positive about Turkey. I have visited this country four times by now and I intend to keep on going there... Why? Because of its great cultural heritage, great natural beauties (sea&sun&send and much more...), great people (kind and friendly) and a great atmosphere in general...
I would like to underline one thing: I didn't have any problems during my visits to Turkey. Plus, I don't ignore people who try to talk to me, I talk to them if I want to and if don't, I usually at least reply "hello" while passing by. And as I said, I didn't have any problems, I met many interesting people this way instead, I even made some friends. On the other hand, I know some western people (I am western, too) who don't want to talk to people this way and they just ignore them, and none of them had any problems neither. So, it seems there is a lot of exaggeration and misinformation on this issue. I just wonder why...

Considering that this country has commited two major genocides in the last century (Armenians, Greek Pontians) and continues to do so against innocent Kurdish people, it is no wonder that people don't have Turkey in such a high esteem.

I am Greek. That makes me not an enemy We are neighbors,we know each other.
We support a western type democratic Turkey. We give so much money to arms. You buy,we buy..
I think Turkey must decide
1.Who is the leader. The Prime minister or the army
2. Is it a free nation or a dictatorship. Are Christians free in Turkey or not
3.Is Turkey ready to pay the ticket to enter EEC.That means no working children, free speech,European rules

YES YES YES. I am half Italian half Greek been to Turkey many times in fact lived for a few years in Istanbul. 42 is an idiot. I regards to the Greek person that made a comment, my friend from what I saw Turkish people never see us as an enemy. I am Catholic and I lived certainly free in turkey in fact in a Jewish neigborhood. there is no pressure other religion followers. If the Turks had imposed that please remember that we would notbe Christians now since the land of Greece was under their rule for a long time. In regards to the army, from what I saw it is a very strong democracy but in order to keep the fundamentalists out army i necessarry. Turkey does not load up in the army because of Greece, they do it because of the Kurds and the fundamentalists threts to the country.
I personally love Turkey and will always support Turkey becaue they have always been so nice to me.
As far as oficer Betty goes by the way check out all her answers she is on a Turkey and Turkish bashing spree. My wife travels to turkey by herself quite often and has never had anything bad to say. In fact one time her comment to me was "I appreciate that men are polite and do not grab you or hit on you when you are going to the bathroom in the clubs"
Somebody trying to lift up her shirt in a 5 star hotel is an absolute joke of a comment.
