It's a magic trick and a good one.
Part of the appeal is that we have to believe it so he plays it as straight as he can ~ being all mystical.
He's really good, that any magician can make a name for himself and do the tricks he does on camera is amazing to me.
Especially in this cynical world.
No one is naive enough to think he's actually freezing himself any more that a magician is pulling a rabbit out of thin air. We know it's a trick and yet are still mesmerized by it because we don't see HOW it's done!
On some of the tv specials they'll let you in on a little bit, sometimes showing how he can flick a card from one hand to the other ... sort of a wink to let us in on it.
