Plant trees. Keep on the look out for cars with leaking fuel, oil or antifreeze. If you find one call the police and ask if there any clean up requirements the owner should know about and do.

This sounds corny but it´s true: Reduce (what you buy) Recycle (packaging materials when possible) Reuse (try to get the most out of each article you use, ex: an empty apple sauce jar can serve in the place of new Tupperware.) Keep your vehicle well-maintained to reduce fuel consumption (filters particularly important and cheap to replace) and use mass transit when possible. Try riding a bike or walking for short trips, good for you, society in general and the environment. Don´t buy products from ecologically irresponsible companies (find out who they are from Greenpeace or other websites.)
Greenpeace has a decent website, so does the EPA.

In everyday life with the way we do things and in the wider context with the way we vote, the products we buy and changing our habites.
Average joe is very powerfull and can make a real difference, especialy when average joe supports other average joes *;)
Everyday life -
1)Use central heating less and wrap up more
2)Use cold water to wash your hands (less gas to heat boilers)
3)Dont leave the tap running when washing your teeth.
4)Drive slower using less fuel. And choose cars that put less pollution in the air.
5)Use a compost, for houshold waste and garden waste, food left overs are great for the garden, with shreaded cardboard in the compost, some woodey materials, and vegetation.
6)Recyle your houshold rubbish, take it to recycling bins or pressurise your local authority to improve recycling.
7)Re-use plastic shopping bags, or recycle them.
8)Put a pile of logs in your garden if you have one, this will give a place for insects and beetles to thrive.
As for voting if it were an important factor in deciding who people vote for, politicans and the government would have to take it seriously.
That my answer *:) Good question !!

Act responsibly.
Research the situation so you are aware of different points of view broader than just your own back yard and your own country. Understand the global environment and what each country brings to the table. Understand what people in different countries do to assist the environment.
Once you have that - ACT, encourage and educate others.
Here's a suggestion of a place to start reading.

There's already lots of suggestions here which I agree with, but one mere average joe can't save the environment. Everyone has to do their bit, so encourage your friends and family to help the environment, too (tell them to pass it on to their friends and family, too).

First of all dont consider yourself as an average Joe, Believe in yourself and you will excel in everything u do. Regarding helping in preserving the environment, first start it with things around you. Try to recycle things, like bottles, use them as vases, plastic bags can be reuse again by washing them and try to segregate garbage like biodegreable and non biodegreable. That way you will help in preserving the environment.
This site is one of the best

By recycling your rubbish.
Better still, re-use and then recycle wherever possible.
Avoid tetra packs and Carrier bags being placed in the recycling bin as they can clog up the machines.
Good effort, nice to see you are making a conscientious effort to do your bit,..................if only others would take your lead.

recycle and reduce waste. by simply buying in bulk you can reduce the amount of packaging that is wasted. use public transportation. buy local foods (this way more of the cost goes to the local grower no a huge company, you are reducing the use of fossil fuels because it isn't traveling as far and you know that no outlawed pesticides and such are being used)!
