I have just gone through this situation .. online dating for almost 2 years and then we went through a 1 year deployment during marriage ..
It takes a lot of time, devotion and work. A lot of communication and yahoo im is wonderful - especially with web cams. Honesty, trust and just working to keep the relationship growing. Expressing when you need a little more because you don't get to have that physically closeness that other relationships have.
Either way .. long distance does work if you work at it
