144 miles cycling is about equivalent to a marathon in running so about 6 times as much on a bike!

Swings and roundabouts.
Uphill bicycles are harder exercise, Downhill and flat I might coast for miles
As an ex-runner and current bicyclist I would say that done properly they can be the same in the same amount of time.
I'll go 60kms on the bike with about 20 being coasting, 20 flat pace-work and 20 uphill. I do it for the trip not the exercises and the only injuries (as long as I don't fall off) are on my bum. Superb cardiovascular and muscle toning. Do it 1-3 times a week for fun. Slowly got fit, but stay fit longer.
When I ran I'd do 5kms just for the exercises and flat or uphill didn't matter (it was all hard), downhill was a b*tch and always took it's toll in injuries. Still have huge thighs today, but my skinny arms from back then have filled out. Lost the cartilage in my knees and seized up my legs. Very quickly got fit, soon lost my fitness when I stopped. Always had to make myself do it.

although cycling does burn a relatively similar amount of calories overall, I believe the difference lies in which muscles are being stimulated more. Running is also going to affect muscles in terms of impact stress when you're pounding the pavement. i think i'm right in saying that you have to cycle at a faster rate/more difficult rate (like uphill) to get the same cardiovascular benefit as with running though if you stand up on the bike for some of your ride you may even get more calories burnt that you would if running.

Unless tou`ve taken up part time work the job centre won`t be interested if you cycle or run, your benefit will remain the same.

As far as you can bike within the same time. But they use different muscles, so you'll never get the SAME benefits.

Cycling is good for you anyway. I hate having to push the bike uphill though.

Did you know you would burn the same amount of calories if you ran or walked for an hour, it makes no difference.
