no, warfare only creates more terrorists. bush thinks he can defeat terrorism by invading and bombing the middle east, but all that is going to do is kill people, and then their family members are going to get angry and become terrorists. it's a cycle.
terrorism is an idea. ideas can't be killed.

Well what causes terrorism?
Well, terrorists first need a cause. By making wars, you give them cause.
And the more self-serving that war, the greater the cause.
And the more innocents killed in the waging of this war gives that cause yet MORE strength.
So, it is indeed a very flawed concept. Violence begets violence. The recent Israel/Lebanon situation clarifies this point even more. As implied by the Israeli PM's own words, they were the victims, but now they have an army and now they have bombs, and now they're hitting back with all the anger and hate residue from The Holocaust with the justice of the Wronged - violence for violence. Misdirected. Blind hate. Bush has made it quite clear that he saw the fight as just an extension of the War On Terror.
The War On Terror is such a flawed concept but he believes if he just keeps repeating the same things over and over again, the American people are just going to go along with it. And so many are. So many believe they are actually SAFER now when in fact the absolute OPPOSITE is true. The 'War' is a smokescreen - a piece of genius propaganda - that basically gives him free reign to wage war on any country he likes. In his own words - he will treat "any country housing terrorists as terrorists themselves".
The US contains terrorists, as does the UK (where I live). Does this mean a bomb is going to be dropped on my home? If it wasn't for our Prime Minister being so much of a lapdog, and our country not being rich in natural resources, we may well have been in the firing line too.
It's a dangerous world when world leaders can just make up wars and wage them without having to answer for their actions.

No. It cannot. The way to defeat terrorism is to create a stronger and stronger contrast between the demonstrated values of civilization and the demonstrated values of the terrorists. As it stands now the terrorists believe in premeditated killing and the United States does (by its death penalty, at least); the terrorists support torture and the U.S. supports torture (its current president does). So long as there are these similar estimations of the transgressibility of the human person, this war is likely to persist. For civilization to prevail, it must refine its "civilized" aspect.

If you are saying can Terrorism be defeated solely by warfare...no I dont think so. As long as terrorism is fueled by mindless religious hate, intolerance, bigotry multiplied by poverty and stupidity...we will never have a total end to this war.
We will need the military in this war because as long as we do not do something to exterminate Osama and Fiends and their ilk...they will continue bombing us until their evil Islamic empire is completed. At the same time we must bring as many people out of poverty and stupidity as possible (if people are happy and smart enough less of them will blow themselves up) and the faith of Islam must purge itself of the influences of Osama and Fiends once and for all (destroy Wahabbism and extremist-Iranian Shia theocratic doctrine).
For the West and all non-Muslims, we must help our Muslim allies achieve this...and avoid antagonizing them unnecessarily.
For all other forms of terrorism...well the basic formula still applies, just change the tangibles...

Religious toleration goes a long way to address this issue. You have to define the word terrorism before you can consider the operational method to approach it. Very few military political actions have succeeded through out history. The real problem is what is left behind. So the social and political actions behind it have to be addressed.

Currently, Nations can attack other nations with impunity by using terrorist networks as weapons and scapegoats. We CAN stop that.
Terrorists that commit terror on their own native countries, rather than going to some other country and attacking..., falls under a different category and should not be considered as part of the "War on Terror."
"War on Terror" is a misnomer. Don't dwell on semantics.

No. Most terrorist acts are done out of principles, mostly religious ones. Warfare may kill a lot of terrorists but for every terrorist that is killed ( and even to become a martyr) 10 new ones are born.
War will kill people but it does not kill beliefs.
