Okay, I have never heard this before. Can a Christian scholar please either deny or confirm this? I mean someone who has studied the bible.

I'll be honest. If I found out that their were more before Eve, then it is of my opinion that the sanctitiy of marriage is not as great as once thought and I am getting out of mine!

I am a christian also, and the only reference I have is the KJV bible. When I say people who have studied the bible, I am talking about people who have read non translated versions.

I actually researched this a while back. The woman you are thinking of, or were told about, is Lilith.

In some old Judeo-Christian traditions, she was the original wife of Adam. She was offended when he attempted to have her lie beneath him during sexual intercourse, and would not meet his request. She demanded equality with Adam, because they were created together in the image of God. When equality was refused her, she left in anger and made her home in caves on the shores of the Red Sea, taking demons as lovers. Adam complained to God, who sent three angels (named Sanvi, Sansanvi, and Semangelaf) to bring her back to Eden. The angels ordered her to return, threatening that they would kill her children if she didn't go back. Exclaiming that even this was better than returning to submission, she refused. The angels carried out their threat. God created a second wife for Adam- the docile Eve.

Lilith was written out of the Bible (and I believe she was written out of the Kabbalah, as well?) along the way by one of the many, many translators.

She is discussed at great length here: http://www.sinaicentral.com/kedusho/A%20Lion%20Roars%20-%20Segment1.htm

Adams Wives

I have read the Bible pretty much in it's entirety. the Bible mentions NO other woman than Eve as being Adam's wife. Genesis 2 is just a more in depth/detailed reading of the same story told in Genesis 1...NOT 2 different stories. The idea that Adam had more than 1 wife come from extra-Biblical stories NOT the Bible.
I happen to believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God and believe that more than I would believe an extra-Biblical source. I encourage anyone to actually read the Bible beginning w/ the Gospel According to John. Before starting to read however, tell God that you are very sincere in wanting to know Him if He really does exist and ask God to reveal Himself to you thru His Word. If you really are sincere, God will know and show you who He is. That's a promise...not from me alone...but the Bible itself suggests as much. Pls read Matthew 7:7 - 12.

According to modern accepted Christain views- hell no.

That does leave the stories of religious writing being burned or discarded by those using the word of God for their own purposes.

The mainstrem views would call those suggestions as heresy and temptations from the devil or at least attempts to lead you from the true word...

Always wished I had good command of olden cultures(words change literal meanings) and old languages... okay a universal translator with a time machine... or at least a nondeath appointment with my maker... have had near death experiences where I FEEL STRONGLY that I was preserved from death by...

My personal faith was restored by those experiences...

Supposedly the Vatican's library contain many works not open for public viewing...

I do believe these are all distractions from the way...

Me thinks a disillusioned married school teacher wants to know...

Love to know what else/why else you ask- god(lil g) email pls

According to some sources, there was one before Eve: Lilith. She wasn't submissive enough and now she's a demon. But, uhmmm, when did Adam and Eve ever get formally married? There were no sacraments at this point.

Ok, I believe he did have three. One was a virgin and Adam did not want to take her purity. I don't remember her name. Then there was Lilith, she got a bad rap because she didn't want to be subservient. Then Eve was last.

Some believe that there was one woman before Eve

The bible doesn't say. There are apocryphal writings (not inspired by God) that seem to claim a knowledge of Adam's life from the time he was created until Eve was. I do not believe he was previously married. But it does make good fodder for the National Enquirer magazine.

No! Adam was the only man on Earth before Eve was created.
