At 150 grains or lower, I have been told than the .308 would meet or exceed the potential of the .30-06 bullet at all ranges. Now I am debating whether or not to use 165 grain or 180 grain ammunition in a Remington SPS that has a barrel 22 inches in length for deer-sized game.

For deer size animals the 150 grain out of a .30-06 (or .308) is plenty. This year I intend to try the 165 grain Hornady SST-LM. This is a 'light-magnum' load that is ballistically (on paper) nearly identical to the .7mm Remington Magnum.

I might nix the light-mag load in favor of a 180 grain simply because where I hunt there have been a lot of feral hogs lately. The heavier bullet would be better on the larger hogs. In .30-06 Springfield I'll be shooting a Steyr Mannlicher S/S Pro w/23" barrel. My 'hog' guns, a .350 Remington Mag. and a .458 Win. Mag. might not have the 'range' (especially the .458) for a long shot at a buck.

Happy hunting.
