Most often this kind of symptom is caused by a pinched nerve in your cervical spine(your neck). Your primary doctor should send u to a neurologist or neurosurgeon depending on the test results from a MRI &/or a CT scan. That will show what is causing the numbness & what options are open to you to resolve the problem..

A few questions, is it just your hand or is it part of your forearm as well? Do you have the same movement in your hand? Any tingling or "pins and needles"? What happened before the numbness began?
i would suggest seeing your doctor and having some tests done. It could be (and more than likely is) a pinched nerve.

After a car wreck where I was wiped around pretty good and held on to the wheel pretty tight I had a numb arm, then later a numb lower back and then leg. And yes it was attributed to a pinched nerve, and it was cured by a Chiropractor adjusting me.

It does sound like a pinched nerve. A chiropractor can help with that. Doctors don't know what to do with that type of thing.

You may have an infection, or damaged a nerve in the arm. I know I damaged my ulnar nerve once and it didn't get better for months. Go see your MD, and maybe a neurologist to have nerve studies done.
