Are you supposed to tip the tow truck drivers that come out when AAA is called for roadside assistance? If so, how much?

It would depend on the situation. If the weather was really bad, or it was late at night and the driver had to change your tire in the rain (for example), then I think a tip would be appropriate.

If it was just a quick battery boost or short tow, (or if you have a low income yourself and can't afford tip) then I'd say you don't need to tip. A tip ought to be an option, not a requirement.

If it's after hours I would tip the guy. I had AAA come to my work once to jump start my car. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the battery--it was some problem with the wiring, and the guy fixed it in about 5 minutes. He didn't charge me for the service call (I don't know if it's still like that, but AAA used to charge a flat rate, plus so much per mile over the stanard 10 miles, or whatever it was) so I gave him $20.00 anyway. It was snowing that night, too.

No. I wouldn't tip them if I'd called them personally. People that should be tipped are those whose wages are extremely low, because the companies anticipate tips. Tow truck drivers charge a hook up fee and a per mile rate. They are making plenty from AAA.

It would not be any more appropriate to tip the AAA /operator driver than it would be to tip your insurance agent for handling your claim! This service is paid for ahead of time, and there are additional charges applied as well, in most cases. You should not tip them.

No, I don't think so. They are providing a service that is paid for by their employer. AAA is paying their employer, and you are paying AAA ahead of time for the possibility that you might need to have your car towed.

I never have, and I've never had any indication that they expect it. They've come out to help me many times. They've always been professional and quick in their work, never hanging around looking at me like I'm supposed to do something. Usually they hop back in the truck before I even realize they're done--I couldn't tip them if I wanted to!

Many times drivers will be driving for another company that contracts with AAA they don't make that much money. 10.00 at most but usually under that.

Yes. I generally tip them $1.00 a mile. So if he tows a car 20 miles, $20.00 ought to do it. Or you could go by the standard 20% of the bill rule.
