In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

The reson why Satan lost his angel status, was because he tried to overthrow God and take over heaven. And he was thrown out of Heaven for that reason.

He wanted the place of Jesus.

Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
Isa 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
Isa 14:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Lucifer the angel was created to glorify God with all his jewels and beautiful stones, he was the most beautiful angel God had created and he became proud because he was better than all the rest. He got so proud that he even thought he was better than God and that he could take over Gods job, to much vanity. So he was banned to hell.

Lucifer fell from heaven becuase he felt worthy of more then simply being Gods archangel. He suffered the deadly sin called pride. He did not understand why God cast him from the kingdom of heaven. God had always taken favor to him until then. He believed God wanted him to have more for himself. Confused he wandered about. From this point there is no record of him. However, many believe he wandered into a place without God. A place refered to as Hell. Knowing this place was free of God Lucifer created his own kingdom.

I believe he went insane and locked himself in a box. He intends to stay there until God lets him out, becuase deep inside he still believes. I believe Lucifer holds no power whatsoever. When he left God, He became something less then mortal life. It makes more sense to me this way.
