According to the Hawaii Biodiversity and Mapping Program, a research program within the Center for Conservation Research and Training (CCRT), Pacific BioSciences Research Center (PBRC) at the University of Hawai‘i, there are no hummingbirds in the state of Hawaii (including Maui), native or introduced. Many people mistake the hummingbird moth (an introduced insect that enjoys nectar from flowers in peoples' yards) for a real hummingbird. There's even what looks like a fan-shaped tail on this orange and brown insect, and the hovering and flower visiting habits are eerily hummingbird-like. Hawai‘i's rare native birds include many nectar feeders, but these are a special group of birds called Hawaiian honeycreepers.

Please see the site below for a picture of the hummingbird moth.

I'm actually on Maui right now, on my honeymoon. So far my favorite thing (besides playing in the waves) has been the swap meet, it's every saturday morning 7am to noon in Kahului if you can't find it ask a local, they will know what you're talking about. We drove the road to hana (not with a tour group) it made me carsick but it was really pretty hehe, I wont go again though. EVERYTHING to do is pretty pricey, you can sit through a "timeshare" presentation and get discounts, but my husband and I are students and dont qualify for their program so I don't even know if they're scams or not. We're doing the old lahina luau in a few days, but it is pretty expensive. we are planning on going on a snorkle trip too. We both just picked 1 thing we wanted to do so that it is affordable. I burn pretty easy, and tend to get sick from a full day in the sun, but the weather here is very nice, the only time it is uncomfortable is when you're directly in the sun. I would recommend going to the beach with a big umbrella to sit under, even though you don't like the beach I have a feeling you'd like to sit and relax and at least look at the ocean in the shade. We went to Kaanapali beach, by the resorts, and there were lots of people playing in the water, the waves were pretty big and I sat under my umbrella watching people, it was really entertaining! People boogie board, surf and some just fall down in waves a lot! Don't forget your sunscreen though, even when you don't think you'll need it. I didnt think about it on the road to hana, ended up burning my shoulders and nose....bleh.
