Should my son (10) play baseball year 'round or take a break for football in the Fall? He plays select baseball and is concerned about losing his sharpness if he takes a few months off for football becuse other kids in select play year 'round! Should we try to do both? We want him to remain a great student first; so it's a lot to shuffle for a 5th grader.

my son also plays baseball year round. I don't know how good your son is or how serious you both are about baseball but football is the #1 reason why lots of guys ruined their baseball career by injuries from football. Arms, knees, shoulders, etc.... My son is 15 and my son is awesome playing the game and mostly I'm proud of his attitude and temperment. I have not once seen him throw equipment or get down on himself. ( "Theres always the next play, I will get the next one " he says) my son would LOVE to play football and hes now in high school, I leave the decision up to him you do have to let them live and be kids. But I also remind him if he wants to go to the top he really needs to think. It takes just one hard hit or hit the wrong way and your dream could become a fantasy.

He will miss playing baseball while playing football...."concerned about losing his sharpness" you say? Have him stick with baseball. That way he can focus on his studies instead of having other worries.

Do not put pressure on him. I like your comment that you want him to remain a great student first. That is your/his first priority. Let him decide and give him all the support. You will have to set conditions though. Let him understand that his studies are not to be negatively affected by his sport.Too many parents worry more about their kids sport and neglect their studies.

I would stick with the baseball. You don't want to overwhelm him with too much because he needs to know that education is #1 right now and focusing on 1 sport will benefit him the most and he will be successful in time.

Find a sport that he loves. Ask him what he really wants or loves. Then you go from there. It's his childhood, anyway. You want him to remember good thing about his sport in another 10-15yrs.
