You are a really smart girl for asking about this - these days no one thinks about this and that is why all of these things spread so rampantly. Good for you for paying attention in your class and asking questions - really - you are a very smart girl. You are not paranoid, etc - this is why STDs and things are sooo common - because people just don't think like you do. You can't get herpes from swimming - see this is scary that people just don't know anything about it - so scary, really. So - my answer is long but hopefully your questions will be answered and hopefully some of these people who answered your question rudely will read this as well.
You can and you can get it without seeing any symptoms - genital herpes is a different simplex than oral herpes but one can be transmitted to the other area. Oral herpes is commonly known as cold sores and it is very common. And just so you know 99.9% of STDs more commonly show NO symptoms at all and condoms do not even protect against some. I was born with the oral simplex but never gave it to anyone kissing or otherwise. They say that it is still possible to give it to someone with no symptoms but it is much harder.
Really - just make sure that you don't see a sore on someone's lip if you are going to kiss them - that is when it is the most contagious. Oral herpes is a different simplex and people are born with it. My dad had cold sores and I had them when I was a baby. So - it can be passed from oral~~>oral or genital and can be passed from genital~~>oral /genital. It never goes away but is not fatal - there are treatments. Cold sores are so common and there are OTC treatments for it but all herpes is caused by a virus which never go away - they stay dormant at at times where you are sick, stressed or have not slept enough, you will get one sometimes.
So, just be careful and when you get to an age that you are having sex, remember you can't see anything - even HIV, herpes and warts - any of them sometimes - but that does not mean it isn't there. So - make sure you and any partner gets tested before sex to make sure - never want to say I wish I...
But as for kissing, just look at their lips - cold sores aka oral herpes is on the outside of the lips or even up to the nose sometimes. I mean you could even get it from drinking out of the same cup, using their toothbrush, sharing utensils, etc.

Herpes simplex 1, also known as cold sores or fever blisters is a virus that is spread through contact with bodily fluids, so yes if you are kissing and he has a cold sore and you have a cut on your lip it is possible to get it. This is different from herpes simplex 2 or genital herpes...
However, life is too short to worry about a cold sore. Once you meet the right person, guy or girl, it will be natural and you will want to do it. Don't let fear prevent you from experiencing life's small joys... meeting someone and falling head over heels... kissing and holding hands... Life is too short

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?
But after a friend share this video everything has changed.

As you get older, you wil have kissed dozens of men. You might as well get started now. Don't let something like that scare you. I think most people have cold sore(herpes) at one point or another. Just don't kiss anyone that has an active sore. The bad herpes is when someone gets it on your other lips.

I must tell you that your concerns are valid, not only about Herpes, but a host of other things. It's hard to know what to tell a young person about this today, because people have become so vile, filthy and disease-ridden.
I really think you'd be better off find one nice boy and staying with him, if you're old enough, and if you're not old enough, maybe just put it off for a while.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

I think 4 out of 5 people have oral herpes. Its not IF you get it but when. Just suck it up, it aint that bad. You just get a little cold sore like twice a year for the rest of your life. You learn to deal with it. Hell, I'll bet you a dollar you already have it and don't realize it. Have you ever gotten a cold sore on or in your mouth?

If they're on the ourside, you'll see them, they'll be scab-like things. I don't know if you can get them inside, but if you can, there really is no way or knowing. Don't be that afraid, the HERPES of the mouth is just a cold-sore ... worst case scenario you'll get a cold sore very now and then. It's not that common anyway.
