Is the paranoia caused solely by the fear of getting caught doing the illegal marijuana smoking or does paranoia just develop as a side effect of smoking the marijuana?

BKzalley, that's so not true! They did a study on heavy marijuana smokers and non-smokers and found that the marijuana smokers had a zero percent increased chance of developing lung cancer. And driving high isn't anywhere NEAR as dangerous as driving drunk. It's a way safer drug.

I think that if marijuana were made legal then no, people wouldn't get paranoid when they smoked it. I have only seen people get paranoid about cops showing up and taking their pot or arresting them. Half the time where I live if the cops show up they take the pot and whatever you are smoking it from and leave, without so much as asking your name. So it isn't as big of a deal there, but when they are in a different town more people get paranoid. Because of that I think the paranoia is merely fear of being caught and not a side effect.

It develops as a side effect. I lived in a country where marijuana IS legal. It still gives the paranoia effect; as well as many other effects. It affects your brain, and the changes that it does to your brain can last for up to 5 years. Some effects of marijuana on brain are long-term, such as it affects memory, speech, and coordination functions for a long time that can last years.

Actually, that is a side affect of using it. Some people get mellow and some become paranoid or have anxiety attacks. Large doses of marijuana can lead to “toxic psychosis.” This can cause people to hallucinate (see or hear things that aren’t really there), become paranoid (feel like people are out to get them) and believe things that aren’t true. These symptoms usually disappear within a week after the person stops using marijuana.

Have you ever smoked weed? Paranoia is not just the fear of getting caught. You could be afraid of setting your hair on fire, crashing your car, or vomitting. Smoke some more and then post a better question.

If it was legal less people would smoke it.
Paranoia is a definite downside of smoking weed
