I got a free CD to install this operating system called Kubuntu. Does anybody currently use kubuntu or is planning on getting it, and if so how does it compare to windows (I'd guess it's quite a bit better). How is the learning curve - is it going to take me a month to figure out how to maneuver around in kubuntu or is it pretty easy to learn? What sort of browsers are compatable - aol? firefox?

Thanks, any and all help is appreciated!

Thanks for the insight guys. I think I'll just boot it and give it a whirl for a while and if need be I can make a seperate partition for kubuntu that way I can maintain my windows environment while simultaneously having the kubuntu there for programming and other things.

Kubuntu is a user friendly open source code based operating system based on KDE, the K Desktop Environment. Kubuntu is the GNU/Linux distribution for everyone.

Definitely there are a lot of different from Windows. If you become expert on it, then performance wise this is better than Windows. But problem is Windows have a lot of third party software that Kubuntu doesn't.

I myself prefer Kubuntu as a Server not desktop. If you like to get learned about Kubuntu more, please visit http://doc.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/desktopguide/C/index.html

I am using Xubuntu, the family ancestor is Ubuntu brand of Linux. The 3 modified children of Ubuntu varies in pre-packaged software: Kubuntu runs KDE desktop (Explorer is the desktop used by Windows, this is the closest analogy I can come up) Xubuntu runs XFCE desktop, Edubuntu dumps unnecessary programs for packing additional educational programs.

Firefox is a popular non-MS browser so Kubuntu have it; it is not a Windows OS so learning Linux from using Windows is like being dropped into a Windows environment from Mac.

I think it's ubuntu, and it's a Linux distribution. It's better than Windows because it's Linux, naturally, but it's not as much intuitive as Windows. It might take you a while to figure it out, so rather than installing it and using it as your main OS right away, I would go into your BIOS and boot from the disk for a while, just so you can see how it works. Firefox, of course, is far, FAR superior to any aol browser. :-P
