YES!! Tons different! I am a MCSE (Microsoft Certified Network Engineer) and they have seminars for us all the time. In this one, they kept saying over and over "Upgrade your customers to XP, especially if they are running Windows ME"
Someone finally asked the girl why she kept saying "especially if they had ME" and she said "I don't know if we're supposed to be talking about this, but Microsoft has recognized Windows ME as being one of its biggest corporate mistakes. It just has too many bugs and other issues that make it a crappy operating system". She went into details. They are built off of 2 totally different architectures. One is the higher end line - Windows 3.1, Windows NT, Win 2K, Win XP, Win 2k3. The other was the lower end line, Win95, Win98 and WinME. The biggest issue is with how the "memory space" was designed to function.
The "memory space" is the section of memory that a program uses to do operations while it's running. The lower end line uses one memory space only for all the programs including the operating system to be used. This means that when one program crashed, it would corrupt everything in that memory space and you'd end up with the blue screen of death and have to reboot. The higher end line creates a new memory space for each program it starts and runs. This means that when one program crashes, you can close it out and none of the others (including the operating system) would be effective. They fine tuned it really well when they released Win2k and then XP making the blue screen a pretty rare thing now days.
In sources are some websites with descriptions of the differences in the operating systems. Hope it helps!
There is one link that talks about the features of both of them, saying that winME has a lot more for media and entertainment stuff... Windows XP has all of that stuff included - the good NT kernel as well as all the fun stuff and support for media applications.

Windows ME was like the last version of 98 that came out, as they are somewhat similiar. Windows 2000 was the next generation of Windows. Then came the ever popular XP. I think XP is probably the most popular version of Windows in it's history. Windows 2000 wasn't very popular at all, but you see LOTS of software that is 2000/XP compatible. Both use a similiar machine code, i guess. 2000/XP is also the first version of Windows to use the NTFS file system, which was more reliable than the old FAT file system. For an example of the differences between the two, if you had a device that let you capture video to your computer, you could only have enough space for up to 4 gigabytes when using the FAT system. When using the NTFS system, you could capture unlimited gigabytes of video.

Is a Ferrari different from Skoda? Of course! Windows ME (Millenium) was a corporate disaster and as bad an OS you could hope for. It was bug ridden from day one and shouldn't have been rushed out. Windows 2000 on the other hand was intended for business and had some really good security features. Windows 2000 was a progression from NT4 whereas ME ws the follow on from 98 Just for the record XP has DOS they haven't done away with it as one person claimed, you can still go to a dos shell. Original DOS was fast I used it before I used Windows and preferred it

Windows 2000 was a vastly improved operating system including lots of the good features from Windows NT and released for people to upgrade from Windows 98.
Windows ME was released slightly earlier but is mostly just like Windows 98, but with lots of cosmetic changes giving users a taste of what Windows 2000 was going to look like.

Windows ME came after windows 98 SE and before Windows 2000. The ME has certain features of 2000 like automatically detecting the device drivers and installing them but windows 2000 is much more advanced and better featured.

Windows ME was Microsofts attempt to fix all that was wrong with Windows '98, and they failed miserably. It was meant to be a form of 'Home Edition' of Windows 2000 (which is meant for the workplace). Steer completely clear of Windows ME - it's quite possibly the worst operating system on the planet!

Yes, Windows 2000 is the first of Windows using Windows NT technology that is not called Windows NT, others are XP, XBox, Media Center, Vista and perhaps Pocket PC.
Windows ME is the last hold out in a DOS line of Windows.
