the rare event called molar pregnancy occurs when the placenta does not develop into its proper form but overgrows into a mass. This is technically called a hydatiform mole. Usually there is no fetus because the fetus has to implant itself in the uterine wall and there form a placenta - with the placental overgrowth there is no way for nourishment to reach it, and it disappears (at that point it is barely visible).
