In its purest form, Philo= Love, sophy=wisdom; Love of wisdom.
Questioning the nature of things, the existance or the origin of things or systems, the application of things or systems or laws and authority. It even questions the questions & the validity of the questions. Philosophy leads us to growth, sharpens us, challenges what we understand or think is right or wrong. It helps us to distinguish between right & wrong in general & specific circumstances. It questions Love and Wisdom and the Philosphy of Philosphy.
Philosophy can lead us to conclusions, that help us to raise children so they can raise their children. Philosophy can be turned to trick men to persecute other men, or make them believe in the invalidity of pure Love of Wisdom.
Philosophy can unify or divide knowledge, nations or people. It can alter or reinforce perceptions. It can clear muddy waters, or muddy waters we thought were clear. It is the exersise of the Human mind and heart that tries to insufficienly explain the soul.
It gets to the roots of the "why" & "how," so that practical application of that which is learned can be tested by performance. Philosophy can be said to be the "mother" of the Scientific Method.
The philosophies of two minds at odds to resolve a question, is like two swords coming together to sharpen each other.
It is by understanding and not always by knowledge that we gain wisdom, as wisdom comes from deeper understanding and questioning with the right questions to get the right answers helps to deepen our understanding.
The Wrong premise will result in the Wrong conclusion. The wrong premise is often caused by insufficient data, or over active tyrrantical ego, or a need to believe that one is right or what is considered popular, is right.
Philosophy must have Love as a component as it is the religion which defines Humans at their loftiest. Not the mushy, muddled, stuff of stories or "Hollywierd" versions. With Love Humans can learn to be Humane Humans. Love of the Wisdom that it takes to propagate the Human species;using & protecting the gifts given to help Humans on their journey shows Love & Wisdom.
The True test of Philosophy is the Living of the Philosophy. "Anyone can "Talk the Talk," talk is the cheapest thing we do; it is only when we "Walk the Walk," is when we Know what we will do." - me

This question is probably better in the philosophy catagory (under arts and humanities). Philosphy I feel, first and foremost is about language and it's relation to reality. Some philosophers have spent way to much time defining the intricacies of words in the absolute sense. That is why they focus on meaning, such as the meaning of life, or what is it to be good, etc. And language is in everything we do, so everything tends to fall back on philosophy, including science.
The problem with language, is that we are relative beings, and only know things as they relate to others, rather then as being absolutes. So some statements or words in a context, can have so many meanings, that they become in a sense meaningless. Like say, if something that is everywhere, how can you define where it exists... you can't, rather its location is undefined. It's the reason in math, they say when you divide by zero it is undefined, because it is all numbers.
There is a cool book, "A beginners guide to reality" by Jim Baggot, it goes through from philosophy all the way to physics, with a lot of interesting facts, talking about a lot of philosophers work. I like his talk about our collective creation of our own hyper reality, like money for example, is nothing more then ink and paper, but we all agree it is worth more. Or like hamburgers, we don't see the cow that was killed to make it, rather we've become distant from that reality.
