Two years -- at least! I dated a guy for a few months...a whirlwind romance... and we soon were engaged and married. We're (happily) divorced now!
I finally met the man of my dreams... I knew the moment I saw him that I wanted to spend my life with him. But we dated for 2-1/2 years before getting engaged.
A minimum of 2 years gives you more time to go through the highs and lows of life together and to really get to know each other, each other's friends, members of each other's family, etc. (Remember, all these people will be a part of your life when you're married!) This gives you time to think things through, work things out, grow together and plan. (And it will be well appreciated in the long run to save yourself from a mistake!)

I personally think that a year is a good time. The longer, the better.
You need to have enough time to get to know as much as possible about your future spouse. All the good, all the bad, habits, friends, family, hobbies... The more you know the better chance you have of making an informed decision about spending your life together. Little surpries before the wedding could be a big surprise if found out after it.
Getting married too soon and too young are the main causes of the high divorce rate in this country.

Well my husband and I were engaged for a month and a day when he proposed, and we got married three weeks later. Weve been very happily married for three years. And neither of us regret it for a single second. There were many people we were close with who told us it was worng, funny thing is all of them are divorced now. We followed our hearts. When you know its right you know. And thats all that matters. Nothing is for sure. But you do have to make sure its right, and that you know eachother. Marriage is a lifelong commitment no matter how high the divorce rate is. Its sacred and needs to be treated as such.

Besides, studys show that when your together for much longer that a year before getting engaged, and engaged for more that a year before getting married, it actually has a lower chance of working out. But everyone is different.

It is customary people should date at least a year before becoming engaged. I just got engaged on friday and me and my fiancee have been together for 11 months. Its simply a matter of personal choice.

Atleast about a year or so. Still the dating period might not reveal everything about the other person. You will come to know more only after living together. But that year will give you sufficient time to get close to the person.

True it depends, My fiancee and I knew each other for about 6 months and date for two of them before we decided to get married. It all depends on the couple.

It depends on the couple, everyone's different. It depends on the compatibility, how much you both like each other, how well you two get along. I say at least 6 months but that's just because I'm a hopeless romantic.

AT LEAST A YEAR OR MAYBE CLOSER. IT GIVES TIME FOR EACH PERSON TO OPEN UP TO EACHOTHER. BUT ON THE OTHER SIDE IT DEPENDS ON THE COUPLE AND TO KNOW HOW CONFIDENT THEY KNOW EACHOTHER AND WHAT THEY WANT FOR THE FUTURE!!

A year at least. You never REALLY know a person till you live with them.
