the only success is antiviral chemotherapy-depending on your genotype...your genotype will indicate how long treatment is

the antiviral meds are interferon and ribavirin

Silymarin has only been shown to lower liver enzyme levels; it does nothing to eradicate the virus. The latest treatment is pegylated interferon (shots- once per week for 48 weeks) plus ribavirin pills. There is a 57-80% chance of being a sustained responder, depending on which genotype you have. It is treatable. I went through treatment 6 years ago and have been clear of the virus since. I have my energy back, and I'm grateful to be a responder. The treatment is a mild form of chemo, but with milder side effects than chemo. My best advice is to educate yourself about the treatment & disease, join a local support group so the people who have been through it can help you and advise you. Plus it's nice not to feel alone. Best wishes.

Hi there.

I might be of help. my father has been diagnosted with hepatisis C a couple of years ago. he got it by receiving blood transfusions in the 80's.

for a treatment my dad took one with 'interferon shoots'. he had to took a sabatical year while on the treatment. he had to give a shot in his lap once every 3 days. the first day, he felt really bad and was grumpy (well more than usual) and very tired. on the other days, he felt better. he lost a lot of weigth during this treatment and had to get blood tested once every 3 months i think. after the treatment was completed, his hepatologist said there is 'no noticable traces of the virus in his blood'. but he still has to keep being check 2 times a year, to see if it comes back or not. Ive heard this treatment is very expensive but my dad had insurances so...

we've also shown that silymerin (milk thistle) can be as effective as interferon administration.
