I have a German class tomorrow at 9:30... first of all I don't wanna wake up that early 'cause I'm a lazy jerk...

But I was wondering if anyone else has taken the language and thought it was fairly easy to learn. Apparently my teacher sucks, we'll see.

But what's your opinion? German, easy to learn? (Is it fun too?)

hey chimichanga

howabout letting people like whatever they want, eh?

I didn't ask what you thought about the language but if you thought it was easy. But thanks for NOT answering the question. Simple question and you couldn't answer it.

For the rest of you, thank you for your opinions.

I'm taking German right now, and my class starts at 9:40, so there you go.

I think that every language has some easy things and some hard things. What you find easy or hard will depend a lot on your native language, the teaching methods used by your teacher, and your attitude. I think if you approach the class with a good attitude and put effort into it (including doing your homework) you'll progress at a reasonable pace.

I've taken a number of German classes--the first one, well I usually skipped but I guess you could count it as easy. Second one, I don't think I skipped and I think I got an okay mark but I don't remember learning much and I do remember always coming up with Italian words instead of German and I'm almost positive we learned that "w" was called "doppelvau" (double-v) when it's really called "wo" (Athough it's usually called "double-you" when it occurs between "George" and "Bush".) Third one was when I just moved to Switzerland (it had never occured to me before that I might actually NEED German at any point) and it was pretty easy, mostly because we didn't learn anything. Fourth one was the best, but hard, actually had to understand the teacher and say things in German (or at least French--the teacher and most classmates didn't speak English). Fifth one was/is good but really hard because for the first time I really have to know grammar, which there's a lot of that classes 1-4 and also 6 didn't bother to teach. Sixth one was fun but again not hard and not really helpful.

So in summary, German classes tend to be pretty easy but actually learning German is hard. My classes 1-3 were in the evening, 4 was in the afternoon, 5 started in the morning but has switched to the afternoon, which although it suits my brain better doesn't really suit my schedule, 6 was in the morning.

Viel Gluck!

I looovvveee German. I speak a lot of it and am going on to study it at Uni. I recommend it!
When it comes to how easy a language is, it depends how serious you are at wanting to learn it. Takes patience at first, but when you get into it, it's great!
It's also good when you can have a proper conversation with a German and no one else has a clue what you are saying. :D

For an English speaker, German is pretty easy to learn (they're pretty similar languages). Watch out for gender and case though!

I think German is probably one of the easier languages to learn. It's more similar to English than other languages. And it's fun to speak. I like how they run a bunch of small words together to make one long one instead of coming up with a new word. :)

Good luck!!! Have fun with it.

its fun. you're going into this with the wrong mindset. you're approaching it as a chore, an unpleasant task. you need to change your viewpoint.

look on it as an opportunity. i took german in college and loved every minute of it.

as far as it being 'hard' to learn---i had some trouble with inanimate objects having genders---like den Kugelschreiber, das Fenster, die Tur. these things you just have to memorize.

and i disagree with one poster who said German wouldn't be a good choice for the job market. what do you want to do? work with professional people and speak German or work in a sweat shop on the Arizona border that employs Mexican illlegals?

hmmmm, German or Spanish---I'll choose German, thanks.

enjoy the class---i think you'll enjoy it if you put some work into it.

It's easy and fun to learn German: so many German words are similar to their English counterparts,

I had a year of German in high school & four semesters of Spanish in college. In my opinion, German was easier but Spanish is probably more useful.

I think it's a hideous sounding language and I am not sure why anyone would bother to learn it when there are other ones that would make you more economically viable in the job market
