You are given the first one around age 4 then again at 14, then you should get one every 8 to 10 years thereafter unless you get cut or step on a nail, etc. Then if it has been more than 5 years, you get another one.

People don't keep up with their shots after they are out of school because most jobs don't require them like schools do.

I went to high school with some kids that needed a tetris shot. That is one stupid game and they played it too much.

On a side note...you only need a tetanus shot when you cut yourself on jagged or rusty metal. Also note that a tetanus shot will hurt badly not due to the needle but due to the effect of the medicine.

You need a tetanus shot after a bad cut. And you really should get booster shots every ten years to maintain your protection. I had to get a tetanus shot when I accidentally cut my finger with the electric hedge trimmer. It happened to be my sister's 30th birthday. That makes it easy to remember when it is time for a booster shot.

A tenanus shot is said to last 10 years, but if you get a serious cut within about 8 years, I'd certainly get another one as a precaution.

You only need to get a tetanus shot when you receive a cut or puncture in your skin from something outside that could be dirty, such as stepping on a rusty nail.

This is how my ER operates.
Tetanus should be given every 10 years.
but if you have a cut, and your tetanus shot wasn't done in the past 5 years you get a booster.
Cut and dry.
