I am a minority--Hispanic, and I am against affirmative action, it seems rather patronizing to me. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Affermative action seems to say "anyone but a white person". My Dad got messed over by this many times. Isn't sigling someone out because of a racial trait the definition of racisim?

Its VERY wrong when a White man score 93 on the firefighting exam but gets left out for the 58 scoring black man (not generalizing, this was an actual experience) because of affermative action!

First of all what is a minority? The reality is that if you look around the U.S and Canada particularly in bigger cities there are generally a good balance and diversity in the population. Afirmative action is not about increasing the population of a particular group race or religion of people. It is a means to try to stop governments and corperations from discriminating against those groups. The fact that so many people of colour (non white people) call themselves minorities, only continues the views of others and the government that they are a minority. How many Hispanic, African, West Indian, East Indian Chinese, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu Budist people are there in North America... I do not see a minority of people on this contanent at all. It's assholes like small town rednecks and rightwing conservatives who want to believe and have the rest of us believe that... The truth is there are just as many coloured people who support those beliefs and
keep people thinking they are a minority. Then they can put an Afirmative action campaine together and look like they're doing somthing major for their comunity and when they get elected Mayor or whatever they're working for the government that they told you they were protecting you from.
It's like during the slave days. Slaves far out numbered the so called masters... But ignorant people in this world will continue brainwashing people into believing it is the other way around. I'm not saying all people of colour should rise up and go to war with the government. I'm just saying if you stop believing you are a mionority and start believing you are equal to everyone else on this contenant and planet there won't be a need for afirmative action movements. Because the fact remains that assholes like the KKK and other ignorant racist bastards are the minority in the world.

You can't have it both ways with affirmative action. It is like being held to a lesser starndard because you are not as smart. If you accept the charity then you are accepting the lable of inferiority. If you want to accept that lable so that prominant white democrats can feel all warm and happy inside about slavery, for example, then go ahead. Otherwise, it's very empowering to refuse such a lable.

In the 50-80 it was really needed to help the opressed minoritys but now it is just patronizing and an old outdated law.

I think you belong already to elite or at least strong middle class, so you are not an average representative of minority. I saw some Jews stating that there are no anti-semitism in Baltic countries and racism against other minorities (though exist much more opressed than Jews too)...and give themselves as examples.

As a rule they were people having very special positions, like top managers of most important foundations, parliamentarians. They could be very useful for Hitler. Maybe he had such friends?

Once you do not belong already to people in minority position (by power criterion), think about others, please. Otherwise you risk to become a monster. If you will not become it, congratulations, you are real elite of your people, you are not an example of badly educated nouveau-riche with all old complexes.

Start to analyse statistics when you make statements and think about reasons. You can understand many things better than people without this background, who also are in your socio-economic class. You may grant them with some common knowledge, which they have difficulties to access or have no chance to be acquainted due to limitations of their university curriculum. As a rule, most of them have no chance to meet also Hispanic or Black people during studies in their top universities too, I mean as class-mates...

My thoughts are that you need some education.
Begin with, how to read and follow directions. (Your question is grossly misplaced.)
Then you can work up to, how to conduct research-which will help you discover the facts about affirmative action.
You may discover that everything you know about affirmative action is incorrect.

I agree. I'm white but any minority who takes advantage of affirmative action loses credibility. Justice Thomas commented on this. I know my view is not popular, but merit and raw talent should decide who gets into school, not the color of your skin.

If racism didn't exist then there would be no need for affirmative action. It developed b/c of racism. If you have 10 people apply for a job or position and no one knew their race, but could only be hired on their qualification, then it would be fair, but that just ain't going to happen.
